Branches of Yoga

Yoga has been practiced for more than 2000 years and has been developing with the passing time for centuries now. As a result, it can be classified into different categories and practices.

Although yoga can be classified into different categories with different aims, objectives and benefits, the common purpose of yoga, as a whole, is to maintain the balance between the human mind and body. Below are a few categories for better understanding about the subject.

Hatha yoga, which is regarded as one of the main forms of the modern day physical therapy has proved to be quite beneficial in increasing the feeling of well-being in an individual. Although meditation is the foundation for all yoga exercises, this technique introduces a range of vital body forms and postures of yoga, which are also referred to as ‘asanas' in the technical terms of yoga. Apart from the asanas, it also introduces a few exercises for breathing, which are referred to as ‘pranayamas'.

Another technique of yoga, known as ‘karma yoga' is based on the principle of karmas, which are our past actions. It is a belief that we reap what we sow; consequently, the present effects on our lives are believed to be the fruits of our actions in the past. Accordingly this technique promotes elimination of any negative or selfish actions in the present, so that we do not have to bear bad fruits in the future. It is suggested to practice karma yoga each day which might be at work or any activity which may be beneficial for social causes like the ‘peace corps'

Raja yoga, another form of yoga highly promotes meditation. It is a form of the more complex form of yoga and is also referred to as ‘classic yoga'. So, this form begins with the hatha yoga to train the body for complex postures. In general, it has been noted that this technique is very popular amongst introvert individuals or people seeking to explore their inner self. People from all castes and religions have been observed to follow this technique with great devotion.

Another category of yoga, jnana yoga is associated to the intellectuals who want to gain extensive knowledge through the yoga texts and scripts, and is generally regarded as a form of yoga related to the human heart and wisdom. It is considered to me amongst the most difficult forms of yoga and is regarded to be the most challenging and direct path.

Bhakti yoga, a very popular form which is related to the feeling of devotion, follows the belief that every creation of the Lord has a divine possession within it. This form teaches a person to respect, accept and tolerate whatever comes our ways in life.

A few of the yoga categories have been discussed here, and the individuals can find a number of yoga techniques and practices, which might suit their need and assist them in balancing the mental and physical peace.
